South end, as you may have guessed, is located on the southern border of Uptown and is located primarily along South Boulevard, and so it was appropriately named. South End was largely created as a result of various industry leaders attracted to the city during the creation of the railroad, the “cotton mill campaign” and the innovations in engineering and design for which this neighborhood is now known. This creativity is evidenced by the transformation of a former cotton mill into Atherton Mill Lofts and the one of a kind “pink building”, The Arlington.
South End has grown exponentially in the last few years, and has benefitted from its location right along the LYNX light rail. Throughout South End you will find a plethora of dual purpose buildings, with residences above and businesses below. This model has been popular to capitalize on this high-demand real estate. In spite of being located on the light rail, this neighborhood is pedestrian-friendly, you will always find residents running, biking and walking their pets along the greenway on their way to Atherton Mill-a popular destination for antiques, restaurants and the fresh market featuring local artisans.
A popular segment of South End is Sedgefield, a collection of duplexes and single family homes located between Park Rd and South Blvd. With its tree lined streets larger lots, Sedgefield evokes a more laid back feel than that of the modern condos and townhomes found on South Blvd. Much of Sedgefield has been renovated or rebuilt from the ground and expanded, further increasing property values when paired with the development of South End as a whole.
